HIGHER EDUCATION IN UKRAINE: SCIENTOMETRIC AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract. The purpose of the article is to study the trends in higher education development in Ukraine, using data from scientific publications in the Scopus scientometric database and statistical data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine for the period 2010-2023. To achieve this goal, the author employed scientific methods such as economic and mathematical modelling, parametric data analysis methods, structural analysis, cluster analysis and statistical analysis. A cluster analysis was conducted using the VOSviewer 1.6.20 software to identify the key research directions in Ukrainian higher education, based on 2,570 scientific publications indexed in the Scopus scientometric database. The bibliographic analysis of the documents revealed the main directions of research in higher education in Ukraine, which correspond to the five clusters formed. The central cluster on the keyword map reflects the main research directions related to the reform of higher education in Ukraine, its international integration, and the improvement of the quality of the educational process. The results of the statistical analysis of indicators of the type of economic activity 85.4 “Higher education” show a decrease in the values ​​of the main indicators in 2023 compared to 2010. The number of business entities operating in the field of higher education fell by 13.5% during the study period. The reduction also affected the number of employees, falling from 11,676 in 2010 to 2,497 in 2023. At the same time, an increase in the volume of services sold in the field of higher education was revealed, with growth rates of 23.3% compared to 2010 and 25% compared to 2022. However, since 2017, the activities of business entities of the type of economic activity 85.4 “Higher education” have been characterised by unprofitability. Therefore, in modern conditions, Ukrainian higher education institutions need to diversify their income sources by attracting grant funding and establishing partnerships with businesses and international organisations.
