THE EXPERIENCE OF APPLICATION OF THE CONTENT ANALYSIS METHOD TO THE STUDY OF ACADEMIC INTEGRITY PRACTICES IN UKRAINIAN HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

Abstract. Taking into account the introduction of the notion of academic integrity into the legislative sphere (what is planned in the new law «On Education»), the article emphasizes the relevance of the study of existing practices of academic integrity promotion, which are embodied in higher educational institutions of our country. The authors describe the notions of academic integrity and the academic code of honour. The article analyses the results of the conducted empirical research by the Institute of Educational Analytics regarding the existing situation and the determination of universities that already have an experience in introducing the basic practices of academic integrity promotion into their activities. During the first stage of the research, the sites of the state and municipal universities, academies, institutes were checked for availability of: student codes of honour, ethical codes of teachers, published statement on plagiarism counteraction (or equivalents of these documents with other names). The second stage of the research included content analysis for the detected texts (except for plagiarism). The analysis has shown that despite the importance of introducing the principles of academic integrity into Ukrainian universities, the codes of honour were found in a small number of universities (in the range of 11-16% of the total number of researched). The content analysis has shown that the most mentioned principles of academic integrity are in those codes, in the creation of which the authors were oriented on the international samples. In addition, the most qualitative content has those codes that combine the ethical basics for all participants of the academic process.

Keywords: academic integrity, content analysis, student honour code, teacher ethics code.
